Today we eat the family |
Okay so... I'm deeply troubled by this.
The only english on this packet reads "Family," and if you look closely amoungst the... nuts?... on the packaging, there appear to be little dead fish... I'm hoping this is just selling the theme and it doesn't contain actual dead fish!
Also... little fish and the word family gives of a very Lovecraft/Innsmouth vibe.
So, that is the source of my current dread.
The family all look the same and lack features... maybe they have "The Innsmouth look" |
First Contact:
Well by now I'm used to the brine like smell of japanese "treats," wich is good because it is here again... but now with a weird peanut like aroma that hits as I breathe in the scent after ripping open the packet.
I spill a little on the bench and survey what I've got ahead of me:
One of these things is not like the other. |
There seem to be cracker like batter things, some sort of coated nuts, puffed (but hard) crunchy things with sesame coated things and possibly a dried bean or pea with some sort of coating oh wait, what's this thing... oh no... OH NO...
Taste Time:
om going to eat these right to left... seems appropriate given the writing on the package. |
Green tinged puffy thing: Man! I keep expecting a cracker and getting cookie... though, weirdly this one has a pea-like after taste? I wonder if that is real of i'm just being influenced by the green look of the thing? I tried a second and got the same sort of after taste... they also have a nut in the middle.
Weirdly delicious!
Pink puffy thing: Same as the green thing... I tried alternating a few, pink and green and I'm less convinced about the pea aftertaste... they are like a very VERY crunchy shortbread kinda taste with a nut in the middle.
Orange thing with little seaweed stripes (not pictured): Right, got it... these things are all so far just variants of the same thing... I think the glaze on them might have a slightly different taste, but I cant really focus in on it.... they are super tasty though!
Peanuts with extra beige on them: What can I say, they took the joy of the glorious peanut and put a tiny crispy coating of sweetness on them! Brilliant... I could eat a lot of these!
Bean/Pea with biege: Exactly like the peanuts minus the nut and with extra dried pea. Pretty good, but not as good as the peanuts... weird vegetable + cookie mashup aftertaste.
Not unpleasant.
Mystery red pellet: It's another Peanut... but with more cookie and a smoother finish and more even coating... I think the red glaze has a dash of spice to it... these may be the best ones so far, a big bag of these would be the win
A small dead dried fish: Oh god.
...
OH GOD WHY!
SOME STILL HAVE HEADS!
IN A BAG OF COOKIE NUT THINGIES THERE ARE SMALL DEAD FISH.
WHY!?
...
Okay... deep breath...
This is the first REALLY challenging thing to eat in this series, so I'm not backing down... here goes.
*Chomp*
munch munch munch.
Um... okay... controlling horror levels...
They have the texture of crunch peanut brittle... and thankfully they are uniform of texture from top to tail.
They have a slightly sweet taste but then a salty and, for lack of a better word, fishy flavor bursts on the scene... and lingers.
They appear to be a toffee/honey glazed dried fish... and they taste exactly like that sounds.
Rationally, the taste is not... bad... and on it's own (MINUS THE HEADS) I think this might even be a great little bar snack... maybe... but intermixed with the cookie like cracker nuts it's just super weird to my poor western sensibilities.
BUT I WILL EAT THEM ALL... (there are only 5)
MUNCH MUNCH MUNCH
Summary:
This is the most foreign snack I think I've ever eaten.
The bag of cookie like crunchy yummy things is great and not very alien at all, but the weird briney flavor that the dead fish occasionally deposit through out the bag is so out of place.
The cookie texture is crunchy and tastes great, I think its the same basic recipe that most fortune cookies are made out of... so all of that, on the nuts (and peas) is tasty...
... but why the shiny staring faces... WHY!?
Truly a playtime snack of Dagon or Cthulhu... Mostly yum, but partially horrifying.
With out the fish I'd eat this again... with the fish... I think I'll avoid it.
