It didn't say "Hi" back... how rude. |
Today's fancy treat is, at least on the surface, better explained than the last.
"Hi Tempura," (I don't know why the greeting is necessary, but that's what it says on the packet,) has a nice bit of English on the front saying it is tempura seaweed.
It also has a quaint little cartoon that I'm pretty sure would border on racist if it was made here... but cest la vie.
Um... probably best to not go too deep into this image. |
It's fair to say I'm not afraid of seaweed, I've stuffed a lot of sushi rolls in my face over the course of my life and enjoyed most of them. And as for tempura, well, my mouth waters at the word.
The problem is that the seaweed I've eaten has always been fresh and soft... except when it wasn't... and then it was like eating the peel off backing of a band-aid.
And likewise, tempura has always been fresh and crispy... and at best, still hot.
So I'm concerned I'm about to munch into a bag of very paper-like, flavorless and sharp "snacks."
It's also just a bit of a worry that, under the little man who we are not talking too much about, the image of the product looks jut a bit like some one threw up some eggs and then sneezed... but hey... at least I'm promised "original style."
Well, thank heavens for that... but I think the flowers are failing to distract me from the product shot |
First Contact:
I ripped open the foil bag and popped open the resealable top.
It's not a big bag, so I wondered how "distinct" the flavor must be to warrant calling it a day on these babies with out munching the lot, and just sealing the pouch back up.

Inside the aroma is not overpowering but it's also... odd.
It reminds me a lot of walking round a pet store, specifically the bird section, where the seed bells are hung.
It's not brine-y like I though it might be for some reason, nor does it smell like crackers. But it does smell like bird food in some indistinct way.
I fished a few out and stared at them.
It's at this moment I take back what I said about how the product was made to appear on the front of the packet.
Turns out they really "glammed" these things up in photoshop, as they are not the most winsome looking treats.
Taste Time:
Okay... CHOMP!
Munch munch munch.
Oh... Oh... Okay...
They have sort of a porkrinds texture... a bit denser than a "puffed crisp."
And they have a slightly fishy taste... I think... it's quite different to how they smell.
They also have a spicy aftertaste I was not expecting, like a little chili.
Munch munch munch.
The second one was a bit different. Much less of the fishy taste with lots more of the spicy taste.
I wonder if there are actually several flavors in the selection in here.
Munch munch much.
Oh, I think the flavor sort of depends which way you pout them in you mouth.
If the green, seaweed side makes contact with your tongue you get a fishy taste, but otherwise it's mostly spice and the fishy taste is barely there.

this photo doesn't do justice to their alien glistening. |

Summary:
Once again I have been overly cautious and it turned out I was in possession of a yummy treat!
They are a bit like prawn crackers but with the potential of more flavor if you eat them "right."
But, yeah, they are not the lookers of the crispy snack world, despite being rather tasty.
Also my lips have a nice little tingle to them... not real heat but just spicy enough to notice.
I would totally eat these again (and I feel you may hear more of that if food continues to trend this way!)
Addendum:
At the bottom of the bag was a packet... when I found it my heart sunk as I thought it was some sort of flavor sachet I had missed and thus robbed myself of "the complete Hi Tempura experience"
I was about to rip open the thing and taste test its weird, millimeter thick green "seeds" when I noted their was in fact English on the packet:
Desiccant
Moisture Absorbent.
DO NOT EAT.
Oh... well... probably best I took a second on that!
